Everything You Need To Know About Remake's #PayUp Petition and PayUp Fashion Campaign
WHO IS REMAKE?
Remake is a nonprofit organization created by women who hope to endfast fashionall together. These women hope to put an end to the dangerous impacts that fast fashion has on the health and wellbeing of the makers and the environment.
WHAT IS #PAYUP?
#Payup is a campaign founded byRemakethat can save the lives of makers. Makers are the reason fashion exists, but fashion brands are the ones hoarding millions in profit, choosing to leave makers severely underpaid.
HOW DID #PAYUP PETITION START?
Following the recent outbreak of COVID-19 the fashion industry was halted, leaving sewn and assembled goods with nowhere to go. Without selling these goods, makers are not making the wage that they deserve for assembling these products. As a result, the wage gap owed to the makers has grown to a staggering estimate of 3-5 million dollars.
Whether out of work or suffering from pay cuts, makers have been left homeless, impoverished, imprisoned, hungry, and ill all in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The #PayUp petition targeted the companies who cancelled their orders from the garment factories that employ these struggling makers. It is time these companies are held responsible to close the wage gap and #PayUp the money that is rightfully owed to the makers.
WHAT WAS THE RESULT?
The first #PayUp petition, which compiled an impressive 270,000 signatures, was successful in returning 22 billion dollars to garment factories from 21 major fashion companies. The 21 brands that have committed to pay in full for orders completed and in production can be found on theoriginal petition’s page. Companies and brands alike are continuing in pledging to #PayUp, giving their maker’s the safety, security, and money they deserve.
HOW HAS THE #PAYUP PETITION EVOLVED INTO THIS NEW CAMPAIGN - PAYUP FASHION.
Success of the first #PayUp petition should not go unrecognized, but there are billions of dollars left to be paid. Remake has targeted18 brands that still need to #PayUp; brands where shareholder payouts are happening and workers remain unpaid, or brands that are avoiding the conversation altogether, guilty of deleting #PayUp comments from their social media posts. These 18 brands withholding millions from the makers is what prompted the creation of Remake’s newest campaign - PayUp Fashion.
